Common Goldeneye

We have been having beautiful sunny mornings lately and I have been joined for my morning coffee by this beautiful Common Goldeneye. He is alone and has been here every morning. I am very happy to have him join me.

Trumpeter Swans Passed By

I was surprised to look up and see a couple dozen big white ducks out in my bay. It appears they are Trumpeter Swans. Some have been reported in other local areas this spring. I have not seen them here before, at least not in the last 15 years. I

Mergansers

I continue to see Mergansers frequently. Sometimes it is a single Common Merganser or Red Breasted Merganser. Yesterday it was about a dozen Common Mergansers cruising by. They continue to be very entertaining.

Not a Duck

This Anna’s Hummingbird has been here for a few days. He regularly perches on the top of this magnolia bush. I think he likes the view. He also likes the Cherry Tree that is in full bloom. I am hesitant to feed birds for several reasons but I plan to

Buddies?

This pair is often seen here. Actually the Gull, California Gull I think, is hounding the Goldeneye to steal a meal. He waits until the Goldeneye surfaces with a catch and moves in to snatch it. I see this regularly, don’t know if it is the same gull, but it

Surf Scoters

I saw a lone Surf Scoter the other day. It was very disappointing. Surf Scoters have always been one of the most common visitors here all winter long. They usually have appeared in small groups in the Fall and by February I have seen huge groups. February, 2011 I reported

About jansbird

I am a retired teacher. I taught high school physics and for the last 16 years was a high school principal. In my first 10 years of retirement I taught part-time at the University of Puget Sound and ran a small non-profit school reform shop called Coalition of Essential Schools Northwest. At UPS I taught teachers how to be principals and at CES Northwest I helped schools implement the principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools, a national school reform program. Now I am really retired and pursuing my other interests full time. I have always been interested in natural history, the identification of living things. My formal science training is in Physics. I have very little formal education in nature but I have always enjoyed nature and living outside and being interested in what I see there. I like water and beaches and over the years have learned about most of the creatures found there. My interest in birds started by watching herons and ducks at my family cabin on Whidbey Island. That led to learning to identify other kinds of birds. I now know most of the local birds. When I moved to Gig Harbor I began keeping a log of the ducks and birds I saw coming and going. This blog is primarily to publish the data collected in those logs.
